Software
Overview of Survey Suite
The Survey Suite is composed of the Designer, Survey, and Investigator. This is a suite of sophisticated programs that can be used to design, conduct, and analyze large, complex surveys. The Designer controls the authoring process, and the Survey reads and links the records produced from the Designer, and controls the processes related to data collection.

Create, design, document, and test survey questionnaires online and then collect data via our Survey software. See the Help and Getting Started pages for more info.
Our Translator software allows questionnaires to be translated into multiple languages (English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Creole, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese). See the Help
and Getting Started pages for more info.
A Survey Demo is available to see the online survey software in action.
Maintenance Window: Friday 8am to 9am EST. Application may not be available then.

Designer
Design begins with an understanding of the questionnaire and how you conduct your research. Great care goes into the planning of your objectives, entering your questions, testing, and simulating the questionnaire. Existing questionnaires in other electronic formats can easily be imported into the Designer regardless of what programming language your questionnaire was written in.
The Center has further extended the use of online survey technology by including an audio computer-assisted self-interview to collect sensitive data. The respondents can choose to read the questionnaire from the computer screen or use earphones to listen to the questions as they appear on the screen. A replacement for the paper self-administered questionnaire, the audio version improves response quality by reducing entry errors, permitting more complex questionnaire design, and minimizing errors due to respondent literacy problems.
At CHRR, the Designer is viewed as more than a field technology. We see it as an opportunity to more closely link the steps before and after the field effort with the actual collection of data.

Survey
While the Designer controls the authoring process, the Survey reads the instrument records, links to the data files produced by the Designer, and controls the processes related to data collection. The Survey differs from other interviewing systems in that the instrument and all the data reside on a central server in Columbus, Ohio. The server sends your computer each question and stores the data you enter. The data going back and forth is encrypted employing the same methods used with credit card information when products are purchased over the Web. This means no sensitive data is stored on the PC.
Post-processing is a process that runs after a case is completed to clean up the answer file. Our approach makes it possible for survey specialists to design, simulate, debug and test a survey rather than relying on computer programmers. Because the discipline of our Survey Suite produces high-quality data, labor-intensive efforts to edit and clean the data and to retrieve missing items are no longer necessary.

Investigator
To assist users in accessing data from large longitudinal data sets, the Center's computing staff merged electronic documentation files with data from each cohort and developed online search and retrieval software. This software allows users to easily peruse the variables present for a given cohort or dataset, select variables of interest, and create ASCII extract files. The data and documentation files for all surveys are also available on CD-ROM.

Translator
Recognizing a need for surveys to be conducted in other languages we have also added a Translator. Translators around the world can now access the translation portion of the questionnaire. A set of tools has been made available to translators so they can easily keep up with the designer running diagnostics which identify new questions added or changes in the text in whatever the primary language may be.

Journal Manager
Born out of the need of editors on CHRR's staff, the Journal Manager software makes it possible for editors to conduct journal business from anywhere that they have internet access. It provides a fully integrated combination of a website, which facilitates the submission of manuscripts and reviews and updates authors on their status; a password-protected confidential on-line manuscript management system to facilitate review requests and distribution of manuscripts; plus an e-mail system that handles communications among editors, authors and reviewers.
Journal Manager is the only journal management system that is ...
* Specifically tailored to social science journals
* User friendly — for editors, authors, and reviewers
* Low cost for superior services
* Customized to the journal's need by JM staff.
All aspects of journal management and operation are integrated into a single system in one central location that is automatically backed up daily. With the click of the mouse, editors can view manuscripts, their corresponding reviews, and all communications regarding a submission. Journal Manager is both secure and efficient, without the typical loss of personalization associated with an on-line system.
