PURPOSE OF THE STUDY - This study is intended to collect information on how children spend their time during a typical week: where they go, who they spend time with, and what they do. By collecting this information via a study-provided smart phone, researchers hope to get a real-time glimpse into the daily lives of adolescents.

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS - Dr. Chris Browning, Professor of Sociology at The Ohio State University, and his colleagues, Drs. John Casterline, Elizabeth Cooksey, Mei-Po Kwan, and Zhenchao Qian are conducting this research.

CURRENT STATUS - We are currently recruiting one youth (age 11-17) and one parent from each household to be participants in this study.

If you would like to be included or just find out more information call 614-962-6446. One of our interviewers will be happy to answer any questions you have and schedule a time to meet with you and your family member if you decide to participate.

Invitation and study facts from Dr. Chris Browning

Dear Participant:

Thank you for your interest in our study of real-time location and activities of adolescents.

My name is Dr. Chris Browning and I am a professor of sociology at The Ohio State University.  My colleagues and I are conducting research on the day-to-day lives of young people.

We want to ask you a series of questions about the places you go during the week, the people you interact with, and what you do at these places.  You will not be giving us the full names of these people; instead, you can make up nicknames or just give us their first name and the first initial of their last name to protect their privacy. We are also giving you a smartphone so that you can check in with us 4-5 times a day for a week and let us know what’s happening at that time. We may also ask you to participate in another part of the study that will involve collecting saliva and hair samples to examine how stress affects adolescents’ health. The saliva (spit) sample will be collected every night before bedtime for the 6 nights you are in the study and once when the interviewer comes to your home for the second visit. The interviewer will also collect a one-time hair sample (approximately 50 hairs—the size of a shoelace tip when bundled) at the second visit.

Our interviewers have been trained by The Center for Human Resource Research, part of Ohio State University.

As with any survey conducted by The Ohio State University, your participation is completely voluntary.  You can refuse to answer any questions you don’t want to answer, and you can end the survey at any time.  If there is a question you don’t know the answer to, just say “don’t know” and the interviewer will move on to the next question.

Some of the questions we ask may be a little sensitive. Please know that any personal information you give us will be kept confidential and secure in a database at The Ohio State University. If you have any questions about this study, please feel free to contact me at 614-292-2983.

The Ohio State University’s Office of Responsible Research Practices is in charge of protecting your rights. If you have any problems or questions about this study that you don’t feel comfortable bringing to the research team, please call Ms. Sandra Meadows at OSU’s Office of Responsible Research Practices at 1(800) 678-6251.

Again, we thank you for taking time to consider sharing your information with us.

Sincerely,

Christopher Browning, Ph.D.
