DEFINITIONS OF THE AREAS OF INTEREST
USED WITH THE WEB GATOR SOFTWARE

There are several ways to search for variables with the Web Investigator software.
One way is to use the groupings called "AREAS OF INTEREST" that are collections of variables about a similar topic. There are 22 different areas of interest used for the closed cases data.
The data also contains created variables which are some key elements in the data.

ADMINISTRATIVE DATA: These data points originated from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The data are collected at the point of service and concatenated at a central data warehouse.
Universe of Respondents: Each variable has a different set of respondents depending on the source file and quality of match.
CHILD CARE: This area contains the data gathered in the survey in a section dedicated to child care questions.
Universe of Respondents: Those respondents that report a child (biological or non-biological) in the household age 14 or under were asked this series.
CHILD WELL BEING: This area groups data from the survey section on biological and non-biological child(ren).
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents are initially asked if they have biological or non-biological children. The respondents who one or the other (or both) are asked several follow-up questions, while those who do not report any children are skipped out of the majority of the section.
COMMON: This area includes data points common to all survey respondents, for example: case id, age, and gender. It also contains several created variables that pertain to only non-child-only OWF respondents (n=1025), for example DURATION and NORETURN-FLG.
Universe of Respondents: Depends on variable.
EMPLOYMENT: This area contains several pieces of information about each job the survey respondents reported during the interview.
Universe of Respondents: Respondents who reported at least one job will go through loops (signified by a question name with an extension .01, .02, .03, etc) for each employer.
GAPS: This area contains the data collected in the survey about between job gaps...that is, any time period of 7 days or more when the respondents did not report a job.
Universe of Respondents: Respondents who had a gap between jobs of 7 days or more.
HARDSHIPS: The data in this area are from a series in the survey about potential financial, emotional, or welfare system hardships the respondents may have encountered.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents.
HEALTH: This area contains information from the survey about health and health insurance for the respondent, spouse/partner, and children.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents. (if spouse/partner or children are not present at the date of survey, information is only collected about the respondent).
HOUSEHOLD: This area contains the data collected from the respondent during the survey about what other household members were living in their residence at the date of interview.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents.
HOUSEHOLD CHAOS: This area contains information collected during the survey about what household members have started and stopped living in the respondents' home.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents are initially asked if they have had any people move in or out since the reference date. The respondents who say yes are asked a series of follow-up questions, and those who say no are skipped out of the majority of the section.
INCOME: This area includes survey questions about the income of respondents and their spouses/partners for the calendar year 1999.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents.
INTERVIEWER REMARKS: This area contains survey data generated by the interviewers after the questionnaire was completed by the respondent.
Universe of Respondents: All completed interviews. Some questions are skipped if the survey mode was telephone as opposed to in-person.
JOBS: This area contains the start and stop dates and type of employer reported by the respondent.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents. Those who report no work will be skipped out of the section.
JOB SEARCH: The job search area contains survey information about the job search process of the respondents.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents are asked some job search questions. There are different paths for those who are employed at the date of the survey than for those who were not employed at the date of survey.
LOCATOR: This area includes questions asked to the interviewer about the mode of the survey and if anyone else other than the respondent was present at the interview.
Universe of Respondents: All completed interviews.
MARITAL/CO-HABITATION: This area contains questions about the marital or co-habitation status of the respondent.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents.
MIGRATION: This area contains information from the survey about the recent addresses of the respondent.

PROGRAM PARTICIPATION: This area contains survey information about the recent welfare program participation by the respondent, their spouse/partner, or children.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents are initially asked if they have participated in a variety of welfare programs. The respondents who say yes are asked a series of follow-up questions about each program, while those who say no are skipped to the next program.
SCHOOL: This area contains information about the respondents formal schooling and education level.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents.
SPOUSE/PARTNER EMP&WAGE INFO: This area contains information about the respondents' spouse/partner's most recent job.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents who report a spouse or partner.
TRAINING: This area contains the information about training programs the respondents report in the survey.
Universe of Respondents: All survey respondents. A series of follow-up questions is asked to those respondents who report attending a training program.
WELFARE SYSTEM KNOWLEDGE: This series contains information about how much the respondent knows about the rules of the welfare system.
